Divisions of the Waffen-SS

Divisions of the Waffen-SS

The Waffen-SS ended up commanding 39 Divisions by the end of the war, the first of which was formed in 1939. Most Divisions contained two regiments, but the foreign Divisions typically contained three (severely understaffed) regiments. The foreign units carried the designation "Freiwilligen" (meaning Volunteers), or "Waffen" (meaning armed). The "Waffen" units were built on volunteers from the Eastern European countries and were considered lesser quality. However, the Waffen-SS was the only branch of the German armed forces that could recruit outside of Germany so they took advantage of it when they could.
